Dog-Safe BBQ Tips for Garden Parties and Park Picnics
Summer’s here, and that means one thing: BBQ season is in full swing. Whether you’re hosting a garden party or heading to a sunny spot in Queen’s Park or Maida Vale, chances are your pup will be joining in the fun. But not everything on the grill is good for your dog – so here’s a quick guide to keeping your four-legged companion safe, happy and well-fed during BBQs and picnics.
The BBQ Do’s
Offer Dog-Friendly Alternatives
While sausages and burgers might smell irresistible, they’re often full of salt and fat. Bring along some plain cooked chicken, carrots, or apple slices (core removed) as tasty treats your dog can enjoy.
Keep Cool & Hydrated
Always have a bowl of fresh water available. If you’re picnicking in the park, pop a collapsible water bowl in your bag and top it up regularly – especially if your dog’s been running around.
Provide Shade
Set up a shaded area using a parasol, blanket or even a tree. Dogs can easily overheat during long afternoons in the sun, particularly breeds with thick coats.
Watch the Bin (and the Guests!)
Dogs are crafty, and that unattended paper plate or rubbish bag will become prime scavenging territory. Ask your guests to bin scraps properly and avoid feeding the dog under the table.
The BBQ Don’ts
No Bones, No Burgers
Cooked bones (especially chicken) can splinter and cause serious internal injuries. Avoid sharing anything heavily seasoned, fatty, or processed, it can upset your dog’s stomach or lead to more serious issues.
Say No to Onions, Garlic & Corn on the Cob
Onions and garlic are toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Corn on the cob is also a choking hazard, even if they do look like they're enjoying it.
Skip the Sauces & Seasonings
BBQ sauce, mustard, marinades and rubs often contain sugar, salt, and ingredients that are harmful to dogs. Stick to plain, unseasoned meat or veg if you want to give them a little taste of the action.
Alcohol is a Definite No-Go
It sounds obvious, but keep drinks, especially beer and wine, well out of your dog’s reach. Even small amounts can be toxic.
Bonus Tip: Pack a Kong or Treat Toy
If you’re at a park picnic and want to keep your dog entertained while everyone eats, stuff a Kong with frozen peanut butter or banana. It’ll distract them from the sausages, and give you a bit of peace while you tuck in.
Summer should be fun for everyone, and that includes our dogs. With a few small adjustments, your next BBQ or picnic can be dog-friendly without a hitch.
